Jolene was released in October 1973 as the first single and title track from Parton's album of the same name.

The lyrics state: "With flaming locks of auburn hair, With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green."

Dolly said she wrote 'Jolene' after a redheaded bank teller seemed too friendly with her husband. The name came from a young fan who asked for her autograph.

It peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100. It did reach number one on the country charts, but it was not a pop crossover hit at the time.

Jack White sings 'Jolene' from a male viewpoint, begging her not to take his man. It's one of the most famous covers, and hundreds of other artists have recorded it.

The original demo, recorded on a portable cassette tape, features just Dolly Parton's vocals and acoustic guitar, performed live in one take with no overdubs.

The iconic fingerpicking pattern was created by Dolly's producer and guitarist. It has no known direct Irish folk origin; it was original to the recording session.
